Ever wonder what isn’t getting cleaned at your office building? You should. Most cleaning services do an outstanding job with the basics of dusting, vacuuming, and cleaning the bathrooms. But there are a lot of areas that may go untouched that shouldn’t. Here’s a list of areas we often find need a lot of attention when we start with a new client.
1. The Microwave (Inside and out)
Let’s face it, the inside of the microwave is where the really nasty stuff happens, right? Most microwave doors get a quick wipe-down. But research shows bacteria forms on the door handle from people opening and closing it with dirty hands. And we’ve all had things spill or explode when we’re reheating something. Unfortunately, studies find this can plant the seed for the formation of E. coli.
2. Light Fixtures and Ceiling Fans
How dirty can lights and ceiling fans get? These things are really high and it’s a lot of work to clean them. Well, it’s worth the effort.
When a ceiling fan is turned on, any dust that’s collected can go flying. This particularly impacts those with allergies. Cleaning the fan regularly Is also important for the longevity of the fan and to make sure it operates efficiently.
The reason to clean lights is more practical. Some reports say when dust and grime build up lights can be up to 30 percent dimmer.
3. Curtains and Blinds
If drapes aren’t cleaned on a regular basis, your nose will notice for a couple of reasons. Curtains are like Velcro for dust and odors. Let them go too long and you may start wondering why you’re sneezing so much and why there’s a smell in the room. Plus, they just look better when they’re cleaned.
Blinds also accumulate dirt, dust, grime and allergens. And, if left dirty too long, blinds can be almost impossible to clean.
4. Furniture and Upholstery
Upholstered furniture also collects dust and odors but is also likely to have stains from people spilling on it. In addition to the reasons listed for cleaning drapes, it’s very important to get the stains out of upholstery as soon as possible. Otherwise, the stain becomes an unwelcome part of the furniture’s design.
There are many more areas that typically need attention. But making sure your custodial service is taking care of the items we’ve highlighted will go a long way toward a healthier and more attractive office.
