50% of the Germiest Office Spots are in the Break Room

A recent study determined the top ten “germiest” spots in an office. The research was conducted in August 2022 for Reckitt's Lysol Pro Solutions. A team of scientists determined the places an office worker is likely to be exposed to dirty surfaces during a typical workday.

Half of the spots are in the break room!

  • Vending Machine

  • Coffee Machine

  • Kitchen Sink Tap/Handles

  • Refrigerator Door

  • Door Handles

Other items to pay attention to include Keyboard & Mouse, Elevator Button, Telephones, Shared Printers, and the TV Remote Control.

Make sure your cleaning service is doing more than just a quick wipe down of these areas. Good practices include keeping everything in the breakroom as clean as possible, so the germs don’t spread and your employees stay healthy.

  • The entire sink area should be cleaned daily.

  • Trashcans should have liners, should be sealed when not in use and the interiors should be cleaned regularly.

  • Floors – hard and carpeted – need to be cleaned daily and should have a deep cleaning at least twice a year.

  • All appliance handles are very susceptible to germs – just think how many people touch them during a typical day. And they probably don’t wash their hands before they do. Daily cleaning is recommended. This goes for anything else with buttons or handles as well. Things like vending machines, water fountains and door, cabinet, and drawer handles.

  • A thorough cleaning – inside and out – of appliances should also be done every 2 or 3 months. Just think how many things spill or explode in a microwave, boil over on a stovetop or tip over inside of a fridge.

Cross Town Cleaning will work with you to develop a cleaning practice and schedule that will help you employees avoid germs and, hopefully, sick days this winter.
